I was first introduced to Karl Marx in my first semester of MSW. Although earlier also i knew about his existence, but it was only during the lectures in TISS i got a chance to understand him. However this understanding took me to a stage where my dream of equal and just society was shattered because now i can see the real motive behind all the so called "good works".
Charity, philanthropy etc became synonyms of exploitation because now i can see clearly why the reach people are rich and why poor exits in the society. International organisations like world Bank appear to me standing on the side of capitalists. In this arrangement of the world , the society where everybody can have equal opportunity of growth became an Utopia. I was not able to comprehend how the tussle between growth (with a profit motive) and equity(with a social motive)can be resolved. I am of the opinion that we need growth but that growth should benefit all the stakeholders. But i was not able to think of any arrangement which can have both these elements.
Recently i got a chance to read Creating a world without poverty written by Muhammad Yunus. In this book he was talking about 'Social Business' and bang here is this answer i was looking for. The profit making motto of a capitalist venture can be mixed with a social motto of NGO to create a system , Social Business, where the motive of equitable growth can be attained.
